And I agree that Brett was the best Holmes. I have a friend who interviewed Brett once and he says he acted pretty much the same way he did as Holmes, except that he was an incredibly kind man. As for the difficulty of the furious writing, actually, that's pretty much the difference between writing mysteries and thrillers. Perhaps the "problem" with the new Homes is that it is structured more like a thriller than a traditional mystery. A sign of the times, probably, and the temperament of todays movie viewers.Allen Appelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07577225721733421143noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2285015481837682105.post-61392803486641609952010-05-17T10:44:32.246-07:002010-05-17T10:44:32.246-07:00The other night, my husband, daughter and I were w...The other night, my husband, daughter and I were watching the new Sherlock Holmes movie. I found it incredibly boring because it seemed that all Robert Downey Jr. did was go from action shot to action shot, getting the crap beaten out of him each time, only for him to jump up and move on to the next action shot. I was unimpressed - not only because Jeremy Brett will always be for me the ideal Holmes (I did used to like Basil Rathbone for his smooth delivery, but Jeremy had the right amount of crazy, smart, I-can-see-his-brain- working that is needed), but because Downey is very capable of offering a nuanced performance (see Restoration) and so his Holmes was wasted on me. Which brings me to TG's comments about the rare woman who writes thrillers. It must be incredibly tedious to write text that has the hero (or heroine) running from one problem to the next. My god, Dan Brown's last book was ridiculously paced! Can you imagine writing that? So, I too, will look forward to reading Susan's book. I know I'm not first with a posting, but I think I know where I can get a copy....Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2285015481837682105.post-62857691977526182602010-05-15T18:59:28.771-07:002010-05-15T18:59:28.771-07:00I would certainly like to read it, based on your r...I would certainly like to read it, based on your review. It's nice to see a female writer swerve away from romance and delving into something else. I'll post what I thought of it after reading it.Bridget Lovellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09898769357475696253noreply@blogger.com
