What makes a friend a friend, or what allows us to connect to other human beings a little or a lot, is often recognizing or understanding commonalities - either in experiences, personality, background or aspects of ones lives that you can relate to, respect, admire, understand or 'get' them pretty quickly. You were able to fill in enough blanks about Jigme from your brief encounter, and about who he was and what he was doing, that his untimely death was all the more sad.
